I’ve been meaning to write this post because here in New Jersey and New York we have so many amazing wedding venues! As a wedding videographer, my job is to capture the magic of your big day—every tear, every laugh, and every special moment. But to do that effectively, the venue you choose plays a big role. The space not only sets the tone for your celebration but also impacts how well your story is told through film. Here are a few things I look for when scouting a wedding venue:

Lighting is everything in video. While we can work with artificial lighting, nothing beats natural light for creating soft, flattering shots. I love venues that have open areas where I can move around without feeling restricted, especially during the ceremony and reception. A venue with clear sightlines, minimal obstructions, and open spaces will make capturing all the best moments much easier.

3. Variety of Locations

Having multiple areas for shots adds depth and interest to your wedding video. Look for venues that offer a variety of backdrops—lush gardens, elegant ballrooms, rustic barns, or unique architecture—so your video doesn't feel too repetitive. Different settings allow for a more dynamic visual story.

4. Acoustics

Good sound is just as important as great visuals. If your venue has a lot of echo or background noise, it can affect the quality of the vows, speeches, and other key audio moments. A space with good acoustics or the option to add sound equipment (like lapel mics or speakers) is key for capturing clear, crisp audio.

5. Flexibility for Creativity

As a videographer, it’s crucial to have room to explore creative shots. Venues that allow me to move freely—without restrictions on where I can shoot or what angles I can use—are a big plus. Venues that offer flexibility, whether indoors or outdoors, make it easier to capture the spontaneous moments that make your video feel authentic.

Outdoor weddings are beautiful, but they come with the risk of weather disruptions. A venue with an indoor backup plan is essential for peace of mind. If you’re set on an outdoor ceremony, knowing that the venue has a reliable rain plan (or a covered area) is a lifesaver for both you and your videographer.

Finally, the overall style and aesthetic of the venue will complement the tone and theme of your wedding. Whether you’re going for boho, classic, rustic, or modern, choosing a venue that matches your vision ensures that the video reflects your personal style, enhancing the memories you’ll cherish for years to come.
